If you’re a beginner and want to install a vent hood inside your kitchen space, check our guide on how to install a range hood all by yourself.
What kind of range hood do you have?
The type of your range hood is one of the crucial factors when it comes to installing the range hood at the right spot. There are plenty of different kinds of range hoods available on the market. Once you find the perfect match for you, then it’s time to install it.
Mostly for ducted range hood, you can install them at an average height of 24 to 28 inches above the stovetop. However, for the ductless range hood, they need to be installed a bit higher because they recirculate the air and need more surface area in order to vent. So it’s suggested to install them at 24 to 30 inches.
Is your stove gas or electric?
Another thing to consider is whether you have a gas stove or elective stove. The electric stove doesn’t produce much heat, and that is why less venting is needed. On the other hand, the gas stove produces an enormous amount of heat. This heat needs to be vented more than the electric stove.
So for electric stove, you can install the hood a bit higher as there is no need of heavy venting. But for the gas stove, the range hood must be installed at an average height of about 20 to 24 inches.
At what height the average range hood should be installed?
The average height for installing your range hood above the stove is 24 to 30 inches. If you install it lower than that, it could block the view. And if it is installed higher, the work efficiency can decrease.
But if you have a short height, then you can install it a bit lower. It all depends on how you feel comfortable.
Factors to keep in mind
Before installing a range hood, there are some things which you need to keep in mind apart from all the factors mentioned above.
What if you install the range hood too low?
If you install the range hood too close to the stovetop, it can have several bad effects.
Start a fire
Mounting the range hood too close to the range top especially if its gas stove, the heat can start a fire. This is not only dangerous for your kitchen area but for yourself too. That is why always be cautious when installing the range vent in your kitchen.
Hood can get damaged
If your range hood is of stainless steel, the heat can highly damage the outer body. And if the vent is exposed to too much heat, the damage can be irreplaceable.
What If you install the range hood too high?
Installing the hood higher than normal can also have various effects on the functionality of the range hood.
Less air venting
When the hood is installed higher, some of the air can get escaped and accumulated inside your kitchen space. This is because the range hood is not venting air properly due to the unusual height.
More fan speed needed
The higher the range hood, the more fan speed is needed because for venting out air completely from the kitchen a more heavy fan is required. And you will have to spend extra money on getting the fan. That is why you must always mount the hood at average height to maximize efficiency.
